According to [url to site] the best domain names for businesses are the ones with the least amount of characters. Back in the old days, we used to suggest buying a domain name with a keyword placed in it like newyorkplumbing.com. Unfortunately that little trick does not work anymore and now Google gives a huge preference for domain names with high Authority Ranking and life longevity.
OK. Back to you and how to choose a domain name for your business. A common misconception is that your domain name has to be the exact name of your business. This is not true. For example, I own a WordPress agency in Montreal. The official name of the business is Motto Design Studio Inc. My primary domain name is motto.ca.
Tips and tricks to buy a great domain name for your business
- Think about giving your business a nickname! Forget about what your official business name is.
- Make sure it’s less than 8 characters in length
- Try to keep it to 2 words or less
- Don’t have any special characters like a “-”
- Don’t stress too much about getting that .com TLD ( I discuss further about how to select a TLD )
Should a small business buy multiple domain names of the same domain but different TLDs?
This one has been argued for a while but I’m a big believer in buying as many variations of your name as a domain name. Think about it. Imagine my domain name motto.ca. If I tell a potential customer to review my website for further information and they type in motto.com. If I don’t own that domain name, the potential client is going to have the experience of someone else’s website. Who knows what website they will fall on? I wouldn’t take the chance. Even worse, it’s a similar business to yours and you lose the business to them! For $30/year I would not take that chance.
